OTTERHOUNDS

The Otterhound is an ancient British breed. They are a large scent hound, and are the only scent hound developed for working in water. They were bred for hunting otter, which at the time were thought to be deterimental to the fish population. The breed possesses an astounding nose and the ability to swim or hunt in cold water for hours on end. For more information about Otterhounds, visit the Otterhound Club of America's website.

Here at Riverspruce Hounds, we share our home with 4 Otterhounds. Our first Otterhound, Tyler, came to live with us at 8 weeks old in 2001, as pictured at right. It became apparent to us after Tyler came home, that this is an incredible and wonderful breed. It didn't take us too long to decide that one wasn't enough!

Our second Otterhound, Liv, came to us in 2003 at 14 weeks of age. While very similar to Tyler in many respects, she was at the same time very different - especially as relates to her activity level!. She fit into our household like she had lived with us her whole life. It wasn't too long before we knew we had to have more!

Our third Otterhound, Tucker, came to live with us in 2006 at 8 weeks old. He, too, fit into our home, and again exemplifies all those endearing Otterhound qualities that we have come to love. His personality falls somewhere between Tyler's and Liv's, and he is our "sensitive" boy.

Our fourth Otterhound, Spring, was born here at Riverspruce Hounds on April 7, 2007, from our first litter of Otterhounds. Spring is very similar to her mother Liv, in that she is a very active girl, always in perpetual motion. We are so glad that Liv blessed us with this little girl!

Please visit each of our Otterhound's own pages to learn more about them, by clicking on their names above, their puppy pictures to the right, or thier links at the top of the page.

Below, Tyler does his "Sheepdog Sam" impersonation, while guarding our ducks - one of his self appointed jobs.
